Columbia University recently announced its Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2026, which will be officially inducted on Oct. 22. Among the honorees is former sprinter Marvellous Iheukwumere, class of 2014, who since graduating from Harvard Law School has had a prestigious legal career. Iheukwumere credits attending Columbia with much of her success on the track and professionally.

Of Nigerian heritage, Iheukwumere grew up in Texas. As a talented track athlete, she was recruited by several universities and committed to Arizona State. After attending a college fair, her mother brought Columbia to her attention, encouraging her to think about planning for life after track.

“I think back to my first week at Columbia; I set foot on that campus…and wanted to be the best student and also the best athlete,” said Iheukwumere, who received First-Team All-Ivy honors and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. “Getting this Athletics Hall of Fame honor is capping that goal I had for myself. It shows how much my time at that school made an impact.”

Being a student-athlete built resilience and the ability to execute a plan and achieve goals. After several years as a paralegal at the NBA, she decided to attend law school and forge a legal career in sports and entertainment. Today, Iheukwumere is associate corporate counsel for Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios.

“I’m a corporate attorney, so a lot of what I’m doing is closing deals, and closing deals is like running track and winning meets,” she said. “Being able to have that winning mentality and also adaptability that sport teaches you has been so crucial in my legal career and also knowing how to manage time. As an attorney in a high-powered career that requires a ton of discipline and focus, sports has been the foundation. … Being able to deliver results, being strong, tough, and courageous are all things I’ve been able to pivot into my legal career.”

Iheukwumere attended the 2024 Olympics in Paris as a spectator and often watches track and field competitions. Now based in Los Angeles, she noted the city is feeling the excitement for the rapidly approaching 2028 Olympics. It has sparked her own interest in some sort of athletic return.

“My athletic juices are flowing,” Iheukwumere said. “I wonder, do I want to start coaching a local team or do I even want to step back on the track in a masters kind of role? Overall, I have positive feelings about track. As I look to the future and having kids, I definitely want my kids to play sports.”
